Happy New Year

It’ll already be 2007 in Australia as I write this, but we’ve still got over 12 hours to go in the UK. Wherever you are in the world have a great new year and let’s hope 2007 is another interesting year in the browser space.

One of the most popular articles on this site was “A Week with IE7” and even to this day is getting a steady stream of traffic. 2006 was a good year for the IE team with their first release in about 5 years, as you’ve seen in my review they’ve still got a long way to go before they catch up with Firefox and Opera in my eyes, but they’re now in a much better position to play catchup with the rest than they were at the end of last year.

That said, the dramatic interface changes in IE7 have made other people look at alternatives. This is good because when people know their options they can make informed decisions. What’s a good browser for me may not be best for everyone. Reading other forums, I know some Firefox users switched back to IE when version 7 was released while many IE6 users moved to Firefox when they were auto-updated to IE7 because they found the Firefox UI more comfortable and Opera has been making gains as more people are becoming aware that there’s a number of browser choices that can be made.

The Browser Den was created initially started to report on the releases of Firefox 2 and IE7. For 2007 the plan is to look at the upcoming Firefox 3, spend more time looking at Opera and also the lesser known browsers such as Camino and SeaMonkey. Not much as been said yet about post-IE7, but once more information is known it’ll also be covered here.

This has also been my first experience of producing a self-funding website. The aim was for the website to cover its costs and this had been made easy with Google Adsense.  The end of year total has been $315.10. I’ve started to plough back some of this money earned into promoting this site, initially via Google Adwords but I’m looking at ways of rewarding other sites that link to here.
