Firefox crop circle on Google Maps

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

The Firefox crop circle is now showing on Google maps. It was part of one of the imaginative Spread Firefox marketing initiatives. It looks like Google were in on the idea - if you zoom out you can see the area taken on that section of the field is newer than the surrounding area and also there’s the cars forming ‘Fx’ below the circle. For more information on this check out the Firefox flicks video blog.

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

As reported in Slashdot there’s a flaw in the password managers of Firefox and to a certain extent IE. It’s reported to Mozilla as bug 360493, the severity of the bug depends on your usage of passwords and the password manager.

In future, to avoid off topic postings on portable music players such as iPod and Zune, I’ve launched music.browserden.co.uk  so far this features reviews of the iPod and Zune as well as the lessons I think Microsoft should learn from the release of the Zune.

Browser Den Stats

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

Our stats will not represent the vast majority of the population. This site has been Slashdotted at least twice. The first was for “The Week With IE7” review and the other the article on Tamarin. So if anything, these stats show people who have an interest in browsers with a slight bias towards Slashdot readers (58.7% of referrals come from Slashdot).

So here’s the top 5 stats:

  1. Firefox - 75.06%
  2. Internet Explorer - 10.4%
  3. Safari - 5.97%
  4. Mozilla - 3.44%
  5. Opera - 2.44%

Of the Firefox users 60.6% are using Firefox 2 with the vast majority that remain are using a version from the 1.5 series. 69.95% of IE users are using IE 6, and 28.9% are now using IE7, there’s a small number still using very old versions.

On the operating system front:

  1. Windows XP - 53.92%
  2. Linux - 21.82%
  3. Mac - 13.18%
  4. Windows 2000 - 10.03%
  5. Windows (other) - 0.9%

Just to make this 100% clear, this doesn’t reflect the public as a whole, it just reflects the choices of the people who use this site.

Opera CEO says .mobi is a waste of time

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

I almost forgot about the .mobi domains as I’ve always personally seen them as pointless so it’s good to see that Opera’s CEO agrees with that.

Opera is the leader in mobile phone based browsers and they’ve produced a small screen rendering mode which tries (successfully most of the time) to make ordinary web sites display well on the small screen. It’s also possible to use the media attribute on CSS to provide custom stylesheets for each different display mechanism. (more…)

Corel to bundle Firefox with WP Office suite

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

Corel plans to distribute Firefox alongside the next release of their WordPerfect Office suite.
It’s a good move for Mozilla because it’ll expose the browser to a group of people who may never have used Firefox before, although it’s important to remember that WordPerfect is now rather a minority office suite so it won’t impact browser usage stats too much. But as Tesco say “Every little helps”.

A look at Project Tamarin

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Quite recently Adobe donated their JIT compiler for ActionScript (an ECMAScript 4 compatible language) to Mozilla. I’ve written an article describing what this means to the future of scripting in Mozilla.

SeaMonkey 1.0.6 and 1.1 beta released

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

The product previously known as the Mozilla Suite has been regularly maintained as SeaMonkey. Version 1.0 of SeaMonkey would have been Mozilla Suite 1.8 if the Mozilla Foundation hadn’t dropped support for it after the 1.7 series. This codebase was also used by Netscape for Netscape 7.x.
An update to the SeaMonkey 1.0 codebase has been released. Thi is a security and stability release of the 1.0 series. Please read the release notes before downloading.

1.1 is a beta release intended for developers, testers and those interested enough and comfortable using pre-release software. See the release notes before downloading, and make sure you back up your profiles if you’re upgrading from a stable SeaMonkey release. (more…)
